LONDONDERRY — Londonderry’s school officials and the School Board are beginning to sift through their options for the Moose Hill School in the wake of a disappointing defeat for expansion plans at the polls in March.

Moose Hill opened its doors in 2001-2002 for preschool and half-day kindergarten programs. In March, the town voted against a $34.2 million project to expand the school at 150 Pillsbury Road to incorporate all-day kindergarten.

At Tuesday’s School Board meeting, Superintendent Dan Black presented the current numbers for preschool and kindergarten enrollment in the fall, and again raised the persistent lack of space and need for all-day kindergarten.

Both the idea of all-day kindergarten and the expansion to accommodate it needed super majorities to pass. While the expansion won a majority, it did not get the 2,490 votes needed to pass; and the all-day kindergarten idea did not even attract a majority.

As of right now, Black said space is not as pressing a matter. He said there are approximately 200 incoming kindergarteners and first graders, as opposed to the usual number of 300 students. Fewer families with children have moved to Londonderry in the runup to the school year, Black said.
